Dr. Hanowell attended George Washington University Medical School where he graduated in 1973. He
was a resident in general surgery at the George Washington University Medical Center from 1973 to 1978 and was Chief Resident
from 1977 to 1978. After graduating, he joined Dr. J. Richard Thistlethwaite in general surgery private practice. They remained
associates for 17 years, practicing in the Greater Washington metropolitan area. In 1994 they were joined by Dr. Margaret
Hart and Dr. William Thistlethwaite. Dr. J. R. Thistlethwaite retired in 1995. Drs. Hanowell, Hart and Thistlethwaite practiced
together in suburban Maryland for 8 years until 2002 when Dr. Hart took an extended leave of absence and Dr. Thistlethwaite
moved to a practice in Kentucky.
Dr. Hanowell practices at Suburban Hospital and Shady Grove Adventist Hospital.
He also operates at the Rockville Surgery Center and the Suburban Hospital Ambulatory Care Center. He also has privileges
at George Washington University Medical Center Hospital where he holds an academic appointment as an Assistant Clinical Professor.
Dr. Hanowell is a Fellow of the American College of Surgeons, the International College of Surgeons, the Southeastern Surgical
Congress, the Society of Laparo-endoscopic Surgeons and the American Society of General Surgeons.
Dr. Hanowell
was President of the Medical Staff at Suburban Hospital from 2008 to 2010 and Chairman of the Department of Surgery
at Suburban Hospital from 2000 to 2003. He has also been chairman of general surgery at both Suburban Hospital and Shady Grove
Hospital. He was the director of the Suburban Hospital Trauma Service for eight years and he chaired the Intensive Care Committee
for six years.
While maintaining a full-service general surgery practice, Dr. Hanowell has special expertise and
experience in laparoscopic surgery, oncologic surgery and breast surgery. Dr. Hanowell currently participates in the training
of surgical residents from the Walter Reed Military Hospital. He has lectured in several areas including laparoscopy
and breast surgery. He was an Instructor in the American College of Surgeons Advanced Trauma Life Support Course (ATLS).
